Chapter 2 of 13

Installing the app and your first run

Getting DriveDecode onto your phone, the three ways to start, and how to look around the whole app before you own an adapter.

DriveDecode is free, and the diagnostics in it are free permanently. There is no trial and nothing expires. Chapter twelve explains the one part that is paid.

Getting the app

The download page has the current links for every platform. On a phone, the App Store and Google Play are the fastest route: search for DriveDecode.

Install it before you walk out to the car. A driveway is a bad place to discover you have no signal.

The first screen

The first time you open the app it shows a Welcome screen with three choices. None of them is wrong, and you can change your mind later.

Sign in or create account. Signing in is not required. It carries DriveDecode Pro across your phone, tablet, Mac and PC, and it is what AI analysis needs. If you are not planning on either yet, skip it.

Continue without an account. Trouble codes, live data, freeze frame and readiness monitors work with no account at all. This is the shortest path to reading your car, and most people should take it.

Explore with sample data. The app runs against a simulated vehicle so you can walk every screen with no adapter and no car. Worth two minutes even if your adapter is already in your hand, because it is much easier to learn a screen when nothing is actually wrong.

The Bluetooth permission

The app asks for Bluetooth permission on this screen, before you ever get near the car. Allow it: the adapter is a Bluetooth device and there is nothing the app can do without it.

On Android you may see two prompts, one to find nearby devices and one to connect to them. Both are for the adapter. DriveDecode does not ask for location permission and does not use your location.

Sample data mode

If you chose Explore with sample data, a banner across the top reads DEMO · SIMULATED VEHICLE · NOT YOUR CAR and it does not go away. That is deliberate. Every screen works, every number moves, and none of it came from a real vehicle. Reports exported from sample data are marked too, so one cannot be mistaken for a real scan later.

Two sample vehicles are available: one with the check engine light on and several stored codes, and one clean car that would pass an emissions test. Between them they cover most of what this manual describes.

To leave, go to Settings, then Data source, then Leave demo mode.

Going back to the Welcome screen

It is not a one-time thing. Settings, then Help & about, then Show welcome screen again brings it back, which is the route to sample data later, or to signing in if you skipped it.

What to do next

Chapter three is the adapter: finding the port, getting connected, and what to do when nothing shows up.
